Findings 04

May 30, 2014

1. Charge Card

I hate it when I left my USB cable for iPhone at home. We all know how weak smartphones batteries are. So I found out about this cool items called Charge Card. It works as a smartphone's USB cable in card size so you can put it in your wallet. Beautifully designed, simple and small. Apparently they only sell charge card for micro USB nowadays. Too bad I didn't found out about it earlier from Kickstarter. Price $25.

Good news, you can find the one for iPhone 4/4s from PhotoJojo. Posting fees is $16 :F

2. Photojojo

Oh yes, I found about this website for years back actually. Thought it might be fun to share to you.
I love stalking those new products in clearly clean interface.

*

7 interview questions that you can ask them back when they said "Do you have any question to ask?" to us? Often, when I went to any interviews, they will ask me this common question, I learned that asking them back is highly expected.

I usually ask; "What is my day-to-day job would be like?", "What does the company expect from me?" and often wanted to ask "What is the company's main goal and what do they believe in?" - but dared not. So this is a compilation of questions that you can ask in an interview.

4. Photographs taken by a mother of a 5-year old, resembling inspiring women of the century.
Kudos both the mother and daughter, the results are beautiful !

5. Panda
Use the Panda as a tool for self-learned designer, you can browse Hacker News, Designer News, Dribbble, Behance and so many other useful websites at one place.

A bit over-used lately, the flat design is getting too much attention, in a good way. Thanks to the trend-setter, I got something to obsess about for the time being and make useful progress. Nice soft colours, nice combinations, I don't know why people would want to complain. Read articles in Flat Design is Getting Too Far by Oliver McGough. Just click on the colour and the colour's code will be saved automatically :

*

It stated there that recruiters go through you resume fast and it took around 6 seconds to catch their attention. Which is a lot to show in miniscule time, so what works is a good design. IF, you are a blooming designer, this might be a good start. If you aren't, a good design still can make a good impression. Useful things like these :

This Week's Findings 03

January 18, 2014

1. Article :
Why I am the worst social media consultant you could ever hire by Rhys Howell :
Struggling to promote your product in Social Media?
You need a better product - not better social media.
True. Great product goes viral effortlessly. When you are really 'good', people will do the talking. If you struggle, then your product is not great enough for the people, keep on improving. Tough love.

2. Moleskine Review :
Moleskine Cahier Small Squared Notebook (Set of Three)
Let's be frank, Moleskine = pricy. And like everything over-pampered, they are quite fragile. They are elegant, simple, minimal and straight to its function, everything I like about a notebook. Plus : I don't need a fancy cover to match, because I know I'll keep those in things I plan to create in the notebook instead. *So Muji & Moleskine's product work for me.
Size A6 : I love everything small, A5 & A6 are great pocket size items in my bag.
Paper quality : quite limited, mechanical pencil works the best in these books, most artlines are not - the paper is quick thin and the ink might be visible from the next page. What I use is Pilot 0.3 and that is decent enough.
Cover : Plain, and the texture might be a little furry after awhile. Dirt = ugly defect esp. oil spill.
Price range : RM30+ per set ( 3 notebooks ).
I used to buy these books, customize them and resell it, back in 2010. These days I use it for myself, too latzy to customize anything. Phew.
Recommendation :
Don't buy if you are not a notebook addict, and against buying over-priced items.

3. Icons :
Find icons from IconFinder, I do a lot of infographic for my daily job, so I find usable icons from there. Make sure you read the rules : some are free, some are only free for personal use, some under CC and other licensing.

4. Politics
It's dirtier and filthier than I thought it would be.
But that's human's game. Expected.

5. GenY Latzy
There's this arguments on this topic : GenY is the worst generation aka Lazy.
Gen 'Y' fights lazy tag by Andrea Davy and Generation Y lazy by Ryan Gibson were some of article written reviewing this topic. Some agree and some disagree. Interesting arguments, some good points taken, some points worth to be discussed.
In general, it might be true, but with reasons. I saw that coming and I, myself often struggle with some points they mentioned. But lazy? Not true, I currently work 2 jobs, weekend or no weekend, holiday or no holiday, along with my small business.
Let's discuss this in later post.

This Week's Findings 1

August 28, 2013

Interesting finding this week :

it's a directory of direct links to delete your account from any web services. Knowing God knows how many web services we signed up in the past couple of years and how much information about you scattered across the internet.

a letter from David Ogilvy replying to his 18-year-old nephew, Harry. Harry was deciding on going to university or straight to working-life, after school. Some people faced the dilemma of choosing their life after school, for me as well.

I wish I know for sure what I was taking for several years with excessive education loan at that time. I wish I work in the field for several months as intern after school so I would know whether I really want to spend the rest of my life in that field or not, and know an insight of working life- *this is really useful. Instead of choosing right ahead. Not everyone knows what to do in their life at 18. Most people will get stuck with the loans and work their head off doing things they don't want to do.

What I would purpose for 18 year-old :
1. Take a year-off.
2. Ask your parents' help to find a work that you might be interested in, apply for an internship if possible, work for 3 months. Your supervisor should know that you are there to learn about the field, not just for the 'acah2' works.
3. Take short courses or classes. If you love writing, take an English or Creative Writing course, if you love helping people, do a volunteer in a hospital, if you think you want to be a travel journalist, learn a new language, etc. So that you will find your passion and learn about the field as well.
4. You don't have to rush it. But maximize it to 6-months or 1 year, before deciding. Don't sit around doing nothing in the house, value your time. I don't understand people doing nothing when there is so much things to do in life.
5. Do a lot of research, because you are creating your future.

I wish I did all of this, but I didn't.
I learned things a bit slower, that doesn't mean I regret anything.

I just bought their latest album : Coexist
and I am still excited over buying it on iTunes and finding out it is automatically downloaded in my Mac and iPhone - even after 2 years. Even better if it automatically downloaded in my petite little tiny iPod Shuffle. *Phew, technology.
