Movie : Isle of Dogs

June 13, 2018
We watched Isle of Dogs, directed by one of my favorite director : Wes Anderson last weekend. Af'd been anticipating the movie for awhile. I wasn't. Although I love Wes Anderson's movies, I do not like stop-motion. So the movie was not in my list and I just watched it to accompany Af.

After the movie :
Booooy, I was wrong (*Like I was wrong when I decided to not watch Kubo and the Two Strings).
I loved it so much. I cried at least twice.
There were 2 things that I just can't 'tahan' : Animals and kids. Combination of both always make me bawl.

Things I love about the movie :

  • The whole aesthetic values : colours, design, frame shots, fonts
  • The detailing of unique characters : "Oracle" because she can 'see' the future just by actually understanding how TV the works, the gossiper "Duke" although we don't see male gossiper in real life that much, "Chief" that was always there with the pack even though he refused to follow the boy "Atari", so it was so much fun to see him everywhere in frames always a bit farther than the pack.
  • Everything looked staged : organized and structured, as usual. Eye-gasm for OCD-ed eyes.
  • A relationship between animals and a boy T^T
  • OmyGOD the cottons for cloud and smoke.
  • I love everything - if you have never watched any of Wes Anderson movies, what are you waiting for? Please start now and binge on everything he directed and produced - even short stories and ads are worth you time.

Questions :

  • Do you think we can have a relationship/bonding with cats as strong as with dogs? Dogs seem to understand human and I always feel intrigued and awed by that. I wonder whether Awan even care about me after 7 years together T^T Noooo, Awaaan.
  • How can someone be this detailed ? Such dedication bothers me a lot :
I love them tiny maggots

Little Things 132 : Film Directors

August 02, 2014
I've seen many of these movies during my case studies among these 4 film directors ; Wes Anderson, Sofia Coppola, David Fincher and Baz Luhrmann. Each of them is unique in making his/her work of art that I can actually see particular styles and ways in their films. I bold some of my favorite movies from them in the list that worth to be watched.

*

Wes Anderson :

Bottle Rocket (1996) | Rushmore (1998) | The Royal Tenenbaums (2001)
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004) | The Squid and the Whale (2005)
The Darjeeling Limited (2007) | Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009) | Moonrise Kingdom (2012)
The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)

Comment : Vibrant colours, unique characters with peculiar attitude, interesting OCD shots, very detailed to the core, lots of connection between the films, hidden meanings/symbolic representation of stuffs, stories in stories, voice-over narration, familiar faces repeatedly in different movies. I love his works. His music compilations are unique, nothing quite like the things we usually listen to.

*

Sofia Coppola :

The Virgin Suicides (1999) | Lost in Translation (2003)
 Marie Antoinette (2006) | Somewhere (2010) | The Bling Ring (2013)

Comment : Aesthetically beautiful, pastel-coloured shots, odd mixture of modern songs in gloomy mood, characters lack of emotions, really slow mixed with silence, depression and loneliness. Her movies are a bit too gloomy for me. I always wonder what's her 'real' stories behind all of her films.

*

David Fincher :

Alien (1992) | Seven (1995) | The Game (1997) | Fight Club (1999)
The Hire (2001) | Panic Room (2002) | Lords of Dogtown (2005) | Love and Other Disasters (2006)
Zodiac (2007) | The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008) | The Social Network (2010)
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011) | Gone Girl (2014)

Comment : Love the twisted mysteries, most of his movies are a bit dark. Not so much of my genre, because I don't really watch thriller or anything that makes my heart goes 'thump-thump-thump', alone. My favorites are Benjamin Button and Fight Club, genius.

*

Baz Luhrmann :

Strictly Ballroom (1992) | Romeo + Juliet (1996) | Moulin Rouge! (2001)
 Australia (2008) | The Great Gatsby (2013)

Comment : Awesome Grammy-winning soundtracks that send chills down into my spine. Baz Luhrmann is a genius in composing songs into his movie, with many shots taken in dark background contrasted with bright surreal colours. He seems to love chaos, songs, party, music and crowds. Soundtracks I keep on replaying on my Spotify : Moulin Rouge and Great Gatsby.

Movie : The Grand Budapest Hotel

April 06, 2014

Dear Wes Anderson's fans,

You can now watch his latest movie :
The Grand Budapest Hotel at MidValley, Pavilion or One Utama.

A special international movie that rarely picked in here, less publicity and advertisement, you can watch it for RM 10 in the smallest movie theater in Midvalley.

For 1 hour and 40 minutes, you will be entertained with interesting story in story, familiar faces, whimsical songs, beautiful backdrops, and little delightful things for you to find. It is definitely a fairy-tale for adult.

I went to watch it on the first show last Thursday, surprised by the RM 10 fees and the smallest movie theater in Midvalley. I enjoyed the whole time. Simply put, he produced a perfect story for me. I felt intrigued to watch it again and again like I did for Darjeeling Limited and Moonrise Kingdom, because watching his movie is like playing 'Where's Wally?" - there will be new things for you to discover each and every time! :D

Most people might not agree with me. After all, I am his fan, things I say about him will definitely be lopsided :D But then, after the movie, I went to watch Captain America *this is after 3 months of no movies, I just think I should do a movie marathon on my day off. It was not half as exciting as watching The Grand Budapest Hotel. Maybe I am bored with the whole super-hero thing, or never-ending destruction or special effects.

Maybe I just need something simple.

Movie : Moonrise Kingdom

May 07, 2013

I watched another movie by Wes Anderson, The Moonrise Kingdom (2012) last week. The movie was written by Wes Anderson and Roman Coppola, remember my post on the Coppola's family ? Or read my previous post on the Darjeeling Limited. Well, this time the main characters were lead by two kids : Jared Gilman & Kara Hayward, both were pretty new in the film industry.

It's an innocent love story of young children, in romantic-comedy genre, you can read the synopsis here.

Movie : The Darjeeling Limited

April 24, 2013

Last week I finished my Sofia Coppola's case study, watched all her past movies but I haven't finished up my writing on the topic yet. In the midst of all depressing Coppola's movie, I listed one of Wes Anderson's movie called The Darjeeling Limited. That lifted my spirit, because I loved it so much ! At last, another good movie in my personal movie list.

How should I summarize? You can read it here, for a proper summary or you can just watch it - better.  It's about three brothers, traveling across India to find a better meaning in life - after they haven't met for a year since the death of their father. They can't cope the pain and lost, so they were drifted apart. The oldest brother, Francis (Owen Wilson) , took charge of the situation after his near-to-death-accident and wanted them to face the problem once and for all. The other two brothers were : Peter (Adrien Brody) and Jack (Jason Schwartzman). So it was about a self-discovery journey in India.
