Work Related : Wander - Second travel book + Video

March 15, 2018
The book, I should have written about my self-published book like 2 weeks ago when I opened for the pre-order (it ended last night). But I was busy and pre-occupied with other small projects and workshops and restocking stuffs  :F I didn't even updated my Patreon page as many times as I should this month.

But I had my coffee and chocolate treats and I supposed I should write something about it now.

*

This is a project that took a year to finish.
Book projects take so much time and energy especially when I'm the one that have to decide on the tone and the style and the cover and the quality of the work. No one gave me any direction - yes, I received suggestions and opinions but in the end I decided on everything. So it is a 'syok-sendiri' project.

I didn't want it to be a travelogue, I didn't want it to be a guide, I didn't want it to be a comic. But I wanted it to be just like a personal travel diary - almost exactly like something that anyone can do when they travel because I did just that. That was my daily input when I was travelling in those 14-days Japan trip. I wanted to show people that it is possible to do such thing (even if you are not a comic artist, or a writer - you can definitely compile something and make your own book).

Wander (buy the book here) 🚀 :

In this book :
  • Daily activities
  • Places I visited in Osaka, Kyoto & Nara
  • Halal restaurants in Osaka
  • Things I saw and found interesting
  • On foods
  • Stamps & ticket/passes I collected

More about this book :
  • Size : A5
  • Pages : 60 coloured pages
  • Printed on 360 gsm matt-laminated cover + 128 gsm art paper for the content
  • Language : English
  • Self-published, printed in Malaysia
  • 100 copies first-print
  • Signed and numbered
Editing was done by my English teacher, Miss Chin.
Note : If you found any spelling/grammatical mistakes please inform me via email : azreen_31@hotmail.com so I can edit and print the improved version in the next printing. After all, this is a self-published book, I didn't have the budget to hire professional copy-writer 😅

*

This book means so much to me, because I did what I wanted to do. I know I travel a lot and every time I travelled, I feel like I should have produce/make something out of it. Useful stuffs. So that my travels will mean something, will somehow benefit others. I'm glad I compiled this in a book form.

The making :

Mini Project : Introvert's Favorite Stuff

December 27, 2017

2 weeks ago I doodled stuffs that introverts like (I referred to what I love) - so perhaps I did a bit of stereotyping here. I'm sure a lot of people love the same things (shoutout to fellow extroverts & ambiverts !) but I think most introverts can relate to this.

As introverts, we love the solitude we can gather in our own house/room. We love being alone, we love the silence, away from all the dramas and distractions. I'm not saying that my lifestyle is healthy, but for the past 9 months I've been so happy and calm. I love working at home, I love the freedom and the silence. I don't expect anyone else to understand, as long as my husband is okay with my choice of living (btw, he is also an introvert so he understands).

So here are the things that I must have :
  • Books (as distraction from the hectic world we are living in)
  • Hot drinks (I love my hot Neslo in the morning, and green tea throughout the day)
  • Favorite pen + pencil , and also doodle book (to write about my thoughts, to doodle, to find previous inspiration and references)
  • Laptop with movies/series (Anything worth streaming - currently I'm watching : The Crown and Riverdale)
  • Pets (in my case, my lovely fat cat; Awan)
  • Comfort foods (Sometimes sweet, sometimes salty but never healthy)

The doodle I did in my book using my current favorite pencil colour from Pilot Color Eno:

Images I edited for the shops :

*

I also made a simple process video of it and posted it on my Youtube :

Just to share to people the process of turning an illustration into something (in this case a postcard + sticker). I'm planning to make a new mini project every 2 weeks. I'm already working on the next one related to foods ! ❤

Doodle : In-Between Series & Work

June 29, 2017

How's your Raya, so far so good?
I've accumulated a lot of mini pimple breakout since the 2nd day of Raya because I've been eating a lot of things without filtration. Not only on my face, also several spots on my body - God knows what I'm actually allergic to this time :F

Anyway, I want to post the quick process video of my "13 Reasons Why" fan-art series that I did last week while resting from my travelogue work.

*

If you are not familiar with the series, well it is on Netflix. It is a story of a teenage-suicide, of a girl named Hannah, and the 13 reasons why she committed suicide. She recorded her story on 7 tapes and passed the tapes to the persons related to her story. It is quite a depressing and heavy story on teenage bullying, depression, and suicide.

I doodled this on my sketch book while watching the series (when we first started the series) and I digitized it right after we finished the whole first season.

Little Things 233 : Over Coffee

February 20, 2017
For the past several weeks, I’ve been coming really early to the office, (at least an hour before my office opens) because my sister is currently out-stationed all over the country and Af had to go to work early + I still don't drive to work.

So I stayed at mamaks and Subway (most of the time) to finish up my travelogue draft before coming in to work. Today, I wanted something different because I’m bored of the cheap sweet instant white coffee at Subway and I definitely can't consume anymore of Mamak’s Nescafe with exaggerated condensed milk after-taste. Like I’ve said because, my taste towards sweet things really changed over these few years. If it’s not because I’m getting old, I don’t know how to explain this bittersweet taste I’m looking for instead of all things sweet and sugary.
Anyone over 30 agrees with me?

Anyhow, so I went to the famous overpriced cafe at my office - that I use to think of as one-kind of wealth & luxury that I would want to achieve (Note : If I can go to this cafe everyday without worrying about spending it over coffee, that means I reached my comfortable phase - kind of thing) Lololol.

But I got old.
And I got over the overpriced coffee.
Funny how time changes things.

Little Things 232 : This thing called Love

February 07, 2017

You know what makes me move forward and never stop illustrating since I was 13 ?
LOVE

*

Yeap, that love that keep me waking up early in the morning just to draw, or stay up late at night. The strength, that energy, that passion come from my love for the things that I can illustrate and I can appreciate. The title that I can hold on to because I know almost everyday of my adult life were spent on creating this sparks that fulfil me. Thank you my Patrons for believing and supporting in me, it's love guys, LOOOOOVE, and I love you guys.

*

I was a bitchy friend - I guess I still am. I can't change this, it's who I am. I don't make friends much, I get too attached and hurt and in weird situation all the time if I get close to someone. I have some issues guys, so I chose to not make any friends.

But I'll try to be the best illustrator/designer I can possible be.

Little Things 230 : Sweet Things

January 26, 2017

I'm old !
I no longer enjoy sweet and sugary things.
Instant coffees and hot drinks in cafes/mamaks make me feel really uncomfortable in the mouth - I rather have unsweetened green tea, mildly sweet coffees or plain water. I used to like desserts and sweets very much.

Daww, I'm old.

Well, my brother is taking orders for home-made carrot cakes - and chosen cakes by request.
You can contact him if you have something in mind. He made this nice white vanilla cake with purplish flowers for a wedding cake today, even I can't do something that beautiful and eatable at the same time. Kudos! Ps - Too bad I don't eat desserts as much nowadays.

Little Things 229 : Patreon

January 18, 2017

Hello !

I just created my Patreon account here.

This Patreon account will help me pursuing my dream to become a full-time illustrator and publish as many books/zines possible. This platform helps creator, maker, illustrator, writer, anyone at all to achieve their dream - it is like Kickstarter for an individual/group.

This year I'm planning to publish several books and zines, so I will need some big helps from all of you  I'll be a bit busy making this year as productive as I can *like I've never been productive before :F

I'll be posting a lot of doodle journals in my Patreon account, if you like this, you can pledge minimum $1 to be entertained by my mini-mini doodles, aaaand if you want, you can get my first ever mini ziiiine or book? Hah, I'm currently finishing of my visual travelogue : the mini stories when I went to Beijing, Istanbul, Bromo and Singapore, compiled into one.

Here is my first doodle journal post in my Patreon, expect a lot this in the account  :

Little Thing 228 : On Creativity and When to Start

January 13, 2017
*

I was one of those people : the ones who feel like they are not good or skilled enough, the ones who feel afraid to tell who they are because they feel like they are not qualified to be one. True, I didn't learn graphic and the rules of designing when I was a student. True, I started with such a low salary that I didn't dare to tell my friends what I'm gaining compared to their salary at IT department.

But I'm way too stubborn too give up, and I hated the labels or inferiority. I wanted to put myself in the place where I can negotiate things that I can offer and what people want to offer to me. I worked myself day and night, weekends and holidays. In those early years : I sent more than 30 emails to random companies that might need some skills that I can offer, I applied more than 30 jobs even without strong experiences in the job I applied for, I accepted so many random freelance jobs : to learn, to learn, and to keep learning.

Everything I want to learn, I make sure I start learning and keep on improving throughout the year.
Try and try again. Even if it's ugly, or wrong, or need a lot of amendments or get repeated rejections.

That's how I get here, that's how I taught myself that I can be what I want to be if I want it strong enough :) Anyone can start somewhere. You just have to make the first step : Just Start.

Work Related : Japanese Foods & Drinks Sticker Packs

October 23, 2016

Here are some of my stickers from my previous trip to Tokiyo that I printed out for my Public Garden, Singapore event a few weeks ago. I've been keeping these for almost a year now :F I used these stickers in my personal travelogue for the trip. Sooo nice that I can draw and make my own stickers for my own syok-sendiri travel journal kan :D

These are my favorite items while we were in Tokiyo - like our first day early morning breakfast when we first learned how to use the vending machine at the airport (I remember the blue morning, cold breezy rain and both of us sitting at the deck waiting for morning light) , or our random juices like Coconut water that doesn't taste like coconut at all - more like a sweetened water that we bought at our first park when we were lost in the city while searching for the nearest Daiso we saw in the map, or our daily breakfast drinks throughout the trip, or lots and lots of Onigiris.
*

*

All ready and packed for next events in November (I signed up for Junk-ed Makers' Market and Etsy Made Local). Also selling these sticker packs  in my Etsy.

Event : Malaysia Hobby Expo, MAEPS & My Biggest Doodle

August 20, 2016

Before the event :

I found out about the event around 2 weeks before the event. I contacted the number stated in their Facebook, for the guy in charge of the event - vendor booth and asked about the booth's price and the whole process. Told them that I'm a doodler and I want to sell my doodle items - all handmade, to let them know that "I doodle and that's considered as a hobby" because I thought last-minute enquiries will be ignored.

But the guy replied and told me that he will call me instead because he got an idea. Later he called and asked me if I could doodle on a huge white vinyl in exchange of the booth's fees and 2 passes. I discussed with Af, and we felt like it was a good opportunity to get a free booth in exchange of my doodle service, so I agreed :D

A week before the event :

I received an exact size of the white vinyl which was 12 x 16 feet and seeing that I can't imagine how big it was, I just said okay without worrying too much. They asked me to doodle "hobbies theme" so I did several sketches in my sketch book, all the items I want to draw : BookWorm Club, The Cosplayer, The Artsy Crafty, The Collector, The Cook, The Sporty, and lastly The Doodler. Fair enough.

I relaxed, until 2 days before the event and we went to Maeps to actually see the white vinyl and I just found out how big it was ! It was ridiculously big ! Big as I never actually imagined I will doodle on before. By that time I felt a bit anxious for the weekend. They told me to start on Friday so they can hang the doodle before the event.

Later I bought so many markers because I didn't know which one to use, and also to avoid running out of ink for drawing that big. I spent around RM 50 for various of markers - that I finally didn't use :p

On that Friday :

I managed to convince Af to take an unpaid leave to 'teman' me that day and help to doodle as well :D I can't imagine doing it alone in one whole day ! So after breakfast outing, we went to Maeps. We started to doodle around 10 am and we finished filling up the whole space around 7pm.

I mostly used one of the markers - the biggest one I have, because I like how thick it looked on it. They laid it on the stage so we had the space to draw freely without anyone's attention.

That was the moment that I realized that I can doodle - still.
After all this years of my own silent treatment.

And so we doodled, until our back ache and our mind exhausted from thinking about items to doodle on such a big white space. Aja even came during lunch our to help, and I just strictly said that they can doodle anything they want - but please bear in mind about the space between items and no fill-in colour to let everything look nice together.

We came out with this :

I want to personally thank Aja and Af for helping me.
It was such a nice experience, after this I can answer to people when they ask me 'how big you've doodled before?' - It was 12 x 16 feet in 8 hours :D

*

On the event days :

It was a 2-days event, we got a booth in the flea market space.

I sold all my sticker packs, postcards, greeting card, totebags and zipped bag printed by CreativeUnited. I got around RM 400 for the event, just by selling mostly stickers :) Alhamdulillah. A nice small income for the weekend.

Here is a video made by Af :

Personal thought on the event :
I wish there are more to arts + crafts people and booths around - I was hoping for more stickers and planners and washi tapes and fan-arts, but there was none. Most items are focused on boy's hobbies - figurines, cars, remote-controlled machines and stuffs that I've never really interested in.

And there was no books. Imagine that.
Is reading not considered as hobby anymore?
I hope next year people will come up with more than 'boy's-toys' :D

*

After the event :

I didn't want to put all the doodle into waste, so I planned on using it for my digital illustration as well. It worked well as a sketch that I can refer from to be digitalized later and turned into stickers. So I'm putting all updates in my dribbble account for now before printing it now later :

Work Related : All things printed

April 20, 2016

I'm planning on joining my 23rd event, celebrating the 6th year in this small independent business. It isn't that far off from where I started, but I definitely learned a thing or two about doing things that I like for fun and making a small income out of it :)

244 orders / 348 sales from Etsy and 22 booths all around later, here I am

I was doing a stock checking of what's left in my sticker library. I need to reprint some of the sold-out stickers and cut more finished stickers from my stock.

*

Postcards are selling super slow on Etsy and I'm too latzy to do a proper photo shooting for some of the art prints, so i'm still keeping them all :

*

I'm still cutting up stickers every now and then, especially when I have the latest series of Grey's Anatomy to watch. Or I can do with Breaking Bad - I'm currently watching the season 2. I still have several hundreds of this sleepyhead stickers that are still raw and need a good cutting :

*

Here I'm using the left over envelopes from the postcards that I ordered. I don't think I'm going to be using the envelope so I'm using it for other things like a nice small packaging for our ESKP car sticker. So 1 envelope can be divided into 2 little packaging and we printed the small sticker to put it on the packaging as well. It looks decent enough for a hand-made packaging, so I'm going to stick with it for now :

*

I printed the camera sets in mini edition.
I kinda like them all, so chibi <3 p="">

By this time I finished all my uncut stickers stocks. I no longer have any stuffs to cut. I finished 2 seasons of Breaking Bad and I need more new stuffs to make before the events :

Work Related : First 30 days in Reckless Life 2.0 as a Freelancer

March 31, 2016

I started as a doodler several years ago in 2010.
I worked myself up to be a self-learned graphic designer and a freelance illustrator since I was still in the university - majoring in IT. I love the fact that I learned so many things along the way, and I explored paths in the creative world as much as I could possibly take while working permanently with companies.

So it's time for an experimental phase again.

Here I'm sharing with you, what it's like to be a noob full-time freelance illustrator. What the days, nights and sometimes weekends look like since I left the 'office' work. I used to get around RM 5k per month as a senior designer + freelancer before this. I left that stable life for a flexible working environment just so I can find meaning to my working life again.

This is a long post that I've been updating everyday for the month of March ;

First week :

Tuesday (1/3) :
  • Illustration - Brownies Packaging + Mockup. The client wants something cheeky and cute in my stroke. So I did something like my personal project - Macaron, and added more items like : brownies, vanilla, almonds, butter, and those little things.
  • Colouring - Brownies Packaging x 4 options
  • Behance - Bfab Branding posted on Behance

*

Wednesday (2/3) :
  • Photo Editing - Wedding Izah. She got married early this year but Af has been procrastinating, so I took the job for the full editing + touch-ups.
  • Test Printing - Brownies Packaging (Failed - refer Pantone colour code for printing). It didn't came out as planned. I realized that everything on Mac looks way nicer than on desktop pc/printed, so the printing result usually goes different that what I see on my screen. I need to re-do the colour and do several more test-print :

*

Thursday (3/3) :
  • Packing - Etsy stuffs + Tokyo Guide - not much of buyers this month as before. And I also posted the Tokyo Guide book to the next borrower :)
  • Packing - ESKP car stickers. I custom made the envelope from our hundreds left-over wedding card envelopes.
  • Illustration - 2 templates (15 x Washi Tapes and 15 x Paper Crafts projects ). :

*

Friday (4/3) :
  • Photo Editing - Wedding Izah
  • Colouring - 2 templates
  • Illustration - Didikan Sakura - redo old illustration :

*

  • Mockup - 3 templates illustrations fro Didikan Sakura

  • Cutting - Stickers for Aja + ESKP mini :
  • Illustration - Japan travelogue Map (4 items)

*

  • Illustration - Japan travelogue Map (5 items) - PTSOne
  • Potential client : Cakenis
*

  • Illustration - Japan travelogue Map (5 items) + Detailing - PTSOne
  • Colouring - Japan Travelogue Map started - PTSOne

  • Illustration : Cakenis's first draft for illustrated tutorial. She sent me this ! But I don't really wear shawls, so I haven't wear it out yet. It is supposed to be the easiest shawl to wear. Here it it :
  • Example of this week's schedule & to-do list :

*

Third week :

Monday (14/3) :

  • Illustration - 4 designs for Freepik's first test (spring, love, anniversary, shop). I managed to complete all first drafts in 1 day, submitted at 3 am the next morning, while having the dateline that 7 am :F
*

Wednesday (16/3) :

  • CelebrateTV : Wushaf's Illustration (1/18)

Thursday (17/3) :

  • CelebrateTV : Wushaf's Illustration (4/18) - submitted drafts and timeline visual. Comment from them : make the stroke thicker and cuter (?)
  • This is the initial ideation and solid stroke illustration that I sent to them :

*

Friday (18/3) :
  • CelebrateTV : Wushaf's Montage draft (x3 options) - Very odd random options that I did. I personally like the third one, but after a while it feels very amateur, even though they did specifically requested something cheeky and cute :

  • Update : They really like the second one. They asked me to something like that and meet them up for a meeting on Sunday, at Chawan.

*

Weekends (19+20/3)
  • Sketch for the latest Freepik tasks
  • Help Kadok (KL > Semenyih > Shah Alam > Home)

  • Meeting with CelebrateTV team, brainstorm from the sketches and drafts at Chawan, Bangsar. They want more test illustrations :

*

Fourth Week :

Monday (21/3) :

  • CelebrateTV : They opted for the sketchy illustrations. So I had to re-do the whole things and additional character as well. Another draft & tester sent :

*

Tuesday (22/3) :
  • Freepik Task 2 - in progress (5/10)- I was so packed with the #wushaf project last week, I didn't have time to do this task. Today I tried cramming these illustrations task. I promised not to take too much time to start on tasks after this T^T
*

Wednesday (23/3) :
  • Freepik Task 2 - in progress (10/10) + amendments. I managed to submit that night, but only 6 of my assigned task were approved before my Art Director went on a 1 week holiday =.= The other 4 remained on-hold until he comes back.  I worked from 10 am - 1 am for 2 days straight, my shoulders are in uncomfortable strain.
  • One of my favorite illustration came from task 2. I used this style before finalizing to much more modern clean 1-stroke style. This looks like Af :

*

Thursday (24/3) :
  • Freepik Task 2 - All of those 6 illustrations were submitted and compiled. My assigned art director is currently on leave until the 30th.
  • CelebrateTV - Wushaf updated content. Discussion with the assistant director through Whatsapp, I was too busy with other things and can't afford to meet up.
  • Freepik Task 3 - Assigned (0/10).
  • Update PTSOne : Travelogue Japan, put on hold. They need to wait for the writer to keep up. April project : Travelogue Turkey.
*

Friday (25/3) :
  • CelebrateTv - Illustrations for the first few scenes.
  • Cakenis - I think I'm failing this. I submitted the updates illustration to Keknis. But I don't think I'm reaching her expectation. She responded with more improvements to be made on the illustration, especially about the style.
*

Sunday (27/3) :
  • Product photography : Shooting at BeadsNBorders - Assisted AF. We took the whole day for around 130 little items. Our back, and thigh were both in pain by the time we got back. It was such a tough little thing, we definitely weren't expecting that.

*

Fifth Week

Monday (28/3) :
  • Aisy Abaya - Photo editing to add size measurement in IG picture.
  • BeadsnBorder - Minimal editing for scarfs lighting. Needed to share the raw files to the client by tonight
  • CelebrateTv - Wushaf illustrations to be submitted by the end of the day. I submitted half of the scenes in the afternoon and another half at night. I worked from 7am until 10pm, almost straight the whole day. It was such an exhausting day. My back was still in pain because of the photo shooting the day before. This is what they sent me from the production team afterwards :D Exciting ! :

*

Tuesday (29/3) :
  • CelebrateTv - Tiny amendments for the submitted illustrations and another extra additions.
  • Zanubah - Amend the logo to fit the new label structure.
  • Freepik 02 - (1/10)
*

Wednesday (30/3) :

  • Freepik 02 (6/10) - I sat in front of the iMac for the whole day, from 5 am - until 7 pm. I actually woke up around 3.30am, when Af was about to go to sleep after he did his freelance works *because now we shared the same iMac - until I send my MBP to the doctor =.=
  • CelebrateTv - There were some new illustrations they needed me to do while shooting. New addition, I had to cancel my working out session and finished it up in an hour.
  • Today was the shooting day. I couldn't join because I was too busy finishing up my Freepik task. So they sent me this :F Too bad I can't watch the whole process :

*

Thursday (31/3) :

  • Freepik 02 (10/10) - All freepik tasks finally ready and submitted to be reviewed by my Art Director. Wuhuu ! I am so relieved ! :D

*

Summary :
  • I did several types of projects in this month. Some of my clients/bosses were : Brownies Packaging, PTSOne, Didikan Sakura, Cakenis, CelebrateTV, Aisy Abaya, my Mom and Freepik.
  • Scope of works : Mostly illustration, some minor designing, photo editing/retouching, and product photography.
  • The thing I hate the most is meeting with clients, because I am forever awkward. The second thing are preparing for invoice and ask for payment.
